Well, I’m back.
For those of you who can remember back that far, in my last post I announced that I would be returning to my blog when I finished the first draft of my WIP. Like the Biblical Pharisees who swore not to eat or drink until they had killed Paul, I think maybe I underestimated the size of my project just a tad.
(As unsuccessful as it was in some ways, I imagine that the hunt for Paul became an excellent diet plan for over-zealous Pharisees.)
But yes, I finally did finish my book. It wasn’t quite the victory high I experienced with the completion of my other two novels, with me jumping up from my swivel chair and doing the happy author dance in front of fifty-thousand-plus words.
This one was a little more like me blinking blearily at the words “The End” through the clouds of dust settling around me, then managing to jab an IV into my own arm before I collapsed across the keyboard.
This last story was HARD, y’all.
But it’s finished. At least the first draft is. And now I can set this story to the side while I get to some of the projects I’ve been aching to get my fingers into for the last several months. Like the alternate history novella I’ve been planning. And a series of novels about an Elven mafia leader, set in a politically-charged fantasy world based on sixteenth-century Europe. I can’t wait.
I’m also looking forward to diving back into this blog. I’m working on a list of writerly things I want to talk about in the future–if you have any ideas for topics you’d like me to write about, shoot me an email and let me know! I’d like to hear from you.
It’s good to be back! And in celebration of my third novel’s first draft, I’ve posted the first chapter here . Let me know what you think. Cheers, ~Braden

Rachelle O'Neil October 9, 2014 Aah, I want more! Reading great first chapters is always a bittersweet thing, and this was definitely a great one. I’m excited for when you finish all your edits and publish it. I will say that it seemed to slow down a bit when you were talking about the prosthetic arm, but, other than that, it was very good! I’m also very excited to see you back to blogging! This is one of my favorite blogs, so I look forward to seeing what you have in store. Congratulations on finishing your first draft! Reply

April October 9, 2014 Braden, I have missed your stories so much and I really, really hope you’ll let me read the Confessor. I have some pre-promised chapters to read, but I can’t wait to read this first chapter as soon as I’ve got those down. Congratulations! And the new story ideas got me all hyped up. I have a thing with anything elf-related and the thought of Elves, Mafia and 16th century fantastical Europe just blows my mind. Reply

Katherine Rebekah October 13, 2014 Oh my goodness it is so great that your back! Writing has been a real drag lately. I could use a boost from your supper helpful blog posts. One question, or maybe more like request for a blog post. You focus on fiction, care to tell how you bring God into that? I mean as Christians everything we do is supposed to glorify God, but I’ve found it kind of hard to work God into fiction, especially fantasy, without it coming across as (God forbid) cheesy. Reply

Archer Catalina (Danielle Fleshman) October 22, 2014 Your story is GOLD! Totally captivating! I am writing about two characters, one with robotic prosthetics, and the other brainwashed, your chapter gave me inspiration and ideas of what they might feel or react. I’m craving more! please publish soon! Reply storymonger October 23, 2014 I’m so glad! Dunno that it’ll be soon, but hopefully sooner rather than later. Reply

Archer Catalina (Danielle Fleshman October 22, 2014 “…the Father grabbed two of the fingers on his left hand and worked his glove off. It fell to the floor… Instead of flesh and skin, there was dull black metal. A metal hand. Gil stared at the metal hand, palm-down on the armrest. He lifted the forefinger, than the middle finger. The geared joints rotated as the fingers responded, but there was no sensation of movement. It was like watching an insect crawl. He flexed the hand, making a fist and then straightening the fingers. Something caught inside the mechanism, a dull click that he could feel in the flesh and muscle of his upper arm. The feeling was comforting, somehow reassuring him that this mechanical thing was a part of him after all…” I just love the flow in this, couldn’t resist a quote. Reply storymonger October 23, 2014 Thanks so much! I’m honored. Reply
